For this week's 50 years in 50 weeks feature, we turn to the August 7, 1975 issue that promoted the second annual Castro Street Fair. Started by the late Harvey Milk in 1974, before he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the fair sought to bring merchants, artists, and the community together for a fun afternoon event that donated money to local nonprofits. Milk, a onetime political columnist for the Bay Area Reporter, tragically was assassinated in 1978, just 11 months after being sworn in as a supervisor. Last year's Castro Street Fair was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now usually held the first Sunday in October, the fair's website says "See you in 2021," although more details are not available.
