50 years in 50 weeks: Jake Shears' 2012 kiki

The year certainly had more 'important' arts and nightlife coverage, but Gregg Shapiro's June 2012 interview with Scissor Sisters front man Jake Shears brings back fond memories of their music, specifically "Let's Have a Kiki" from Magic Hour, their fourth album, and their rousing local concerts while on tour. Any band with a cute openly gay singer's always a highlight for us.

On writing upbeat songs, Shears said, "It's much more challenging to write a positive song than a negative one. It's a lot harder to write something uplifting than it is to write something melancholic. It's really hard to write something uplifting about subject matter that's really a bummer. My answer would be that I like writing happy-sounding songs about relationships and situations that aren't necessarily something to get happy about."
