Rosie’s ‘View’ is ending

Out lesbian television talk show personality Rosie O’Donnell said Wednesday, April 25 that she will be leaving the popular ABC program “The View” in June when her contract ends. O’Donnell made the announcement on the show and said that she and ABC were unable to come to terms for a new contract. Reportedly, ABC wanted a three-year deal, while O’Donnell wanted only a one-year contract.

Barbara Walters, a host and co-owner of “The View,” brought O’Donnell aboard last year after Star Jones was let go. At the time, according to widespread media reports, Walters was aware of O’Donnell’s outspokenness, and O’Donnell has not disappointed. Since joining the program last fall, O’Donnell has publicly sparred with Donald Trump and others. She has also spoken regularly about her partner, Kelli Carpenter, and their children. O’Donnell and Carpenter came to San Francisco in February 2004 and got married during the famous “Winter of Love” when same-sex couples were allowed to wed.

O’Donnell said that she expected to return to “The View” as a guest host. Ratings for “The View” increased during O’Donnell’s tenure.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation credited O’Donnell with bringing visibility to the LGBT community during her time on the program.

“From her first day on ‘The View,’ Rosie put lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues front and center in America’s living rooms,” said GLAAD President Neil Giuliano in a statement. “While sometimes opinionated and sometimes controversial, Rosie used her national platform to tell our stories, and for that, gay people and our straight allies will always be grateful.”
