Pride Rally 4 Equality Saturday

It’s been a little while since there’s been an LGBT march down Market Street, and organizers are hoping to change that with a Pride Rally 4 Equality this Saturday, June 5.

The gathering will begin at noon at Harvey Milk Plaza with a rally for full federal equality in employment, the military, marriage, immigration, healthcare and housing.

A march down Market Street to the Federal Building at 7th and Mission streets will follow. There, there will be another rally and a petition for full federal equality will be distributed. The event is expected to end by 2 p.m.

The rally is meant to invoke June 27, 1970, when a handful of people marched from San Francisco’s Aquatic Park to City Hall and held a rally.

A “Gay-In” was held at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park the next day.

Almost 40 years later, the struggle for equality continues.

“We have much to be proud of but so much work to be done. We cannot give way to the assumption that we LGBT people are living with the same benefits and rights as the rest of society, not for one moment,” organizers said in a statement.

The Petition for Full Equality is available here.
