Biden on gay marriage

Local gay photographer Bill Wilson attended Delaware Senator Joe Biden’s appearance last Wednesday, May 2 before the World Affairs Council in San Francisco to take some shots of the Democratic presidential hopeful. While Biden was asked if he supported gays serving in the military, to which he replied yes, the issue of gay marriage never came up.

Yet when Wilson reviewed his photos it was clear Biden expected it might. Scribbled on a piece of paper Biden is holding in one of Wilson’s photos is a note saying “Government can’t dictate the definition of marriage to religious institutions but government must protect the rights if individuals from discrimination by society.” It doesn’t exactly say he supports gay marriage, but it is nearly identical to a response he gave NBC’s Tim Russert in April.
